Most growers don't love figuring out postage. Here's a simple starting point so you can price your listings fairly without overthinking it. Buyers see your shipping price on every listing, so a fair, honest number keeps your sales moving; a number that's too low quietly comes out of your pocket.
Tubers & clumps: what to charge
Dormant tubers are light, but they're alive, and speed protects them. The community standard is USPS Priority Mail: two to three days door to door, free boxes, and flat-rate options that map neatly onto order sizes. These suggested prices reflect what established dahlia farms actually charge:
- 1–3 tubers: $10–14. A Priority small flat-rate box fits this perfectly; most farms charge about $12.
- 4–10 tubers: $15–19.The Priority cube or a medium box; $17.50–18 is the going rate.
- 10–20 tubers: $19–25. Priority medium flat-rate and up. Weigh it; bulk adds up fast.
- Bulk (20+): weigh and quote. Weigh the packed box and use the carrier calculator, or pass the actual Priority or UPS Ground rate to the buyer.
How to pack them
Always a box, never a padded mailer; mailers let necks snap and eyes break off in transit. Wrap or bag each tuber (glassine bakery bags stack beautifully and add a little edge protection), label the bag with the variety name, and cushion everything with vermiculite, wood shavings, or crumpled paper. Fill the head space so nothing shifts, then give the box a shake test: if you can hear movement, add more padding. Pack like somebody is going to drop-kick the package, because somewhere between you and the buyer, somebody will.
Rooted cuttings
Cuttings are live growing plants and need a sturdy box and quick transit (USPS Priority or UPS Ground). Use a flat rate: $15 for 1–3 cuttings, $20 for 4–6.
Seeds
Seeds are the cheapest thing on the market to ship, and they should be priced that way: $1–2, or free. A packet of dried dahlia seed goes in a plain stamped envelope, no box and no heat pack. Tuck the seeds into a small paper or glassine envelope inside the mailer so they don't shift, and you're done. Many sellers just fold postage into the price and ship seeds free.
Choosing a carrier
- USPS Priority Mail: the standard for tubers and cuttings. Fast (1–3 days), tracked, free boxes, flat-rate options.
- USPS Ground Advantage: cheaper for small, light packages, but slower (2–5 days). Fine for short distances in mild weather; skip it in heat waves and freezes.
- UPS Ground: usually wins on heavy or bulk boxes, 10+ tubers or big clumps.
These are estimates; always weigh your packed box and check the live rate with the USPS or UPS calculators. For labels, we recommend Pirate Ship: completely free, and it unlocks the deepest USPS discounts, including Ground Advantage and Priority Mail Cubic. Weigh your packed box, buy the label, print. Most dahlia growers already swear by it.
Shipping legally & keeping stock clean
Tubers and cuttings are live plant material, and moving them between states is regulated to stop pests and disease from spreading. A few habits keep you on the right side of it, and keep your buyers' gardens healthy:
- Ship bare and soil-free. Shake or rinse off all soil before packing. Soil carries pests and is restricted or banned in many states; clean, dormant tubers travel best anyway.
- Never ship diseased stock. If a plant shows Crown Gall, Leafy Gall, or signs of virus, don't list it and don't ship it. When in doubt, leave it out.
- Check both ends of the trip. Some states, California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, and Florida among them, inspect or restrict incoming plant material. Shipments to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and other US territories are generally prohibited or require a phytosanitary certificate, and international orders almost always need a certificate and an import permit.
- Get any required inspection or certificate. If a destination requires a phytosanitary certificate or permit, that's arranged through your state Department of Agriculture before you ship.
